How the calculation works
Excess waste cost = value of material purchased x (your actual waste % minus the benchmark waste %). Your actual rate = (quantity purchased minus quantity theoretically installed) divided by quantity purchased, taken from the take-off rather than from memory.

Which materials waste the most?
Tiles, reinforcement steel and paint usually lead the list. Cutting, poor storage and ordering a little extra "just in case" are the three causes behind most of it.
How do I measure my actual waste rate?
Compare what you actually bought against the theoretical installed quantity from the take-off. That difference, divided by what you bought, is your real waste rate.
What is a realistic benchmark?
Roughly 3-5% for concrete, 3-7% for reinforcement and 7-10% for tiles depending on the pattern. Sustained figures well above those bands are a management problem.
Is waste a cost problem or a margin problem?
Both. It is spent cash that never becomes work in place, so it comes straight out of profit — which is why it belongs in the monthly cost report, not an annual review.
