How the calculation works
Tiles = area divided by the area of one tile, plus waste: about 7% for a straight lay, 10-12% for diagonal or offset patterns, and a further 2% in small rooms where nearly every tile meets a cut. Boxes = tiles divided by pieces per box, always rounded up.
Frequently asked questions
How much waste does a diagonal layout need?
10-12%, because every tile meeting a wall is cut at an angle. Large-format tiles in small rooms push the figure higher again, sometimes past 15%.
Should I keep spare tiles after handover?
Keep one box of every colour and batch for future repairs. A later production run of the same reference rarely matches the original shade closely enough to patch a floor.
How much tile adhesive will I need?
A 25 kg bag of cement-based adhesive covers roughly 5-6 m2 with a 6 mm notched trowel. Large-format tiles laid with back-buttering consume noticeably more.
Do I measure skirting separately?
Yes. Skirting is measured in linear metres, not square metres, and it is usually cut from the same tile reference — order it with the floor to keep the batch consistent.
