How the calculation works
Tonnage = area x layer thickness in metres x compacted density. Dense-graded asphalt mixes commonly compact to 2.30-2.40 tonnes per cubic metre, and a small waste allowance covers paver start-up and joint trimming. Calculate each layer on its own: binder and wearing courses differ in thickness.

What layer thicknesses are typical?
The binder course is normally thicker than the wearing course, but the governing figure is the project specification and the road classification, not local custom.
Does the tonnage include the base course?
No. This covers the asphalt mix only. Aggregate base and sub-base are measured as separate compacted volumes with their own compaction and testing requirements.
How much tack coat will I need?
Tack coat between asphalt layers is usually specified as a residual bitumen rate of roughly 0.2-0.5 litres per square metre. Take the exact figure from the specification.
Why does delivered tonnage differ from my calculation?
Because compacted density varies with the mix and the compaction achieved. Reconcile against weighbridge tickets after the first day and adjust the density you use.
